How useful are coin apps when coins are dirty or tarnished?
Many of my old coins are dirty or have tarnish. Do identification tools still work effectively in such cases?

Light dirt and tarnish usually don’t prevent identification if the main design elements are visible. I recommend gently cleaning with water and a soft cloth first, then taking photos in bright light. The app can still match the coin in most cases. Heavy encrustation may need more careful handling.
